Home Security Tips For Your Summer Vacation

40300682 - summer backgroundNow more than any other time of the year is when most people like to leave their home and get out of town. In fact, because of the nicer weather, this is when a lot of families reserve their big summer vacations and will be away from their home several times through the next few months.

However, while you and your family are planning your summer vacation plans and packing the car to get on the road – the burglars around your area are planning their reconnaissance and which homes they will be violating this summer.

And, the first thing that they are going to look for is signs that no one is home. In fact, having a dark home is the number one criteria for a burglar who is looking to break into a home and steal. If the home is dark outside and inside, then they can get in and get out without being detected.

In fact, they can get in and get out several times – or, invite a friend to come and help them carry your really heavy and valuable possessions away. Don’t let this happen to you. Follow these simple tips for keeping your home safe while you are away on vacation:

  • Make sure that all of the doors and windows are locked before you leave. While the front and back door are the most common point of entry – an unlocked window is not a difficult thing to climb into. Consider adding ‘charlie bars’ to your windows for added security. This way, even if the window lock is not secured – the window cannot be opened.
  • Remove your hidden key before you leave. While this might come in handy – it is not worth leaving a key to your front door laying around your porch. A smart burglar will look for your hidden key before he tries to pick the lock.
  • Keep the outside of your home well-lit even if you’re not home. Especially if you’re not home! Add motion lights to the outside perimeter of your home. Walk around your home at night so that you can see any areas that are dark and need to be lit up. Install motion lights to those areas especially. Make sure that your porch light is on – even if you leave the house for your vacation during the day.

If you are going to be away from your home on vacation – the worst thing that you can come home to is a vandalized house. Follow these tips to avoid the situation and ensure that you and your family return to a safe and unviolated home.
