The way that your home is kept safe during the winter differs a bit than during the summer months. During the winter, you have to keep in mind that the days are shorter and there is less sunshine to light up the dark spots on your property.
This is also the time of year when many families like to leave home for a little bit to go see friends and family for the holidays.
Typically, when you leave your home during the winter, there are many expensive items in your home somewhere – being collected as holiday gifts.
Burglars know this and that is why more homes are targeted during the winter months than any other time of the year.
Thankfully, there are some things that you can do to protect yourself and your home from the stress of a home invasion:
- Double check your windows and door to make sure things are locked before you leave the house. This is one step that a lot of homeowners forget or just don’t do but, it makes a big difference to a burglar. If your doors are locked – they are likely to just move on to another home where the locks might not be locked
- Install motion lights or lights that are on a timer so that the lights inside and outside of your home are turned on when you get there. This is especially helpful if you get home from work after the sun has gone down – which many of us do during the winter – and it is dark outside
- Cut back all of the shrubs and bushes that are around your home. Pay close attention to those that are under the widows as this is the perfect place for someone to hide while breaking in.
- Talk with a professional about installing a home security system. There are a variety of packages and features included in today’s home security systems. You can even monitor your home from your smartphone!
Make sure that your home and your family are protected this winter by paying close attention to your home security. The winter might seem too cold and dark for a burglar to be prowling but, the opposite is true. This is the time of year when your home could be a target specifically because it is cold and dark outside. Use these tips to make sure that doesn’t happen!
